Kia ora from Dunedin!
We are in the latter half of our first week and the guys have gotten their first taste of rowing on Otago Harbour. Yesterday they all got the chance to scull and experience some wonderful, sunny weather. They also had their first chance to wet launch in the frigid water. Don’t worry, they’re all very tough and didn’t mind the chill, even if their toes did go a little numb.
While a few of the guys had sculling experience, for most it was one of their first times deviating from sweep rowing. It’s hard to tell from the photos, but they handled it pretty well.
Today they returned to sweep boats and were sent out in a four and a pair. On the whole the boats went very well, especially considering the fact that a few of the guys had to switch sides. Below are some videos of the boats I took from the back deck of the boatshed. It’s a bit hard to see the boats while they’re surrounded with such spectacular scenery. Don’t worry, there will be more videos closer up coming soon!
Tomorrow they have their first 2k test, which they are all very excited (and a little nervous) for. As such, it will be a night of carbo-loading and pre-race mental preparation.
