FINAL DAY – RACE DAY!
Campers were able to sleep in this morning, because on this Final Day coaches put together competitive line ups to give athletes an opportunity to practice what they have learned and coxswains a chance to “execute” Athletes traveled down to the Macomber Boathouse where they had their team picture.
As usually, the silliness began:
Coach Rufo introduced the “70’s High Five” in which the campers executed with enthusiam:
Fortunately, SPARKS has hired a very experienced coaching staff, and Coach Krystina Sarff and Coach Grace Hollowell where there to show the campers EXACTLY how the “70’s High Five” SHOULD be executed:
DOWN TO BUSINESS
After the group picture, it was down to business. Coaches split the campers up into their set line ups and athletes began their normal warm up routine. Coach MacDermott and Coach McElhenney me with the coxswains to explain how they would be rotated as well as the traffic pattern and race course. Races would be run downstream in front of the Macomber Boathouse so parents and athletes could watch from shore.
Racing was set up in “heats” with the Junior Men going first, and then the Junior Women. Parents watched from the shore, and our Learn To Row was able to compete as well. See the following pictures and video:
If you look in the background of the 3rd video you can see the Learn to Row developmental crew keeping together and working hard!
Week 1 at Wesleyan was a huge success in 2015. Coach Kevin MacDermott delivered the final thoughts for the athletes, and introduced our excellent coaching staff. Next week, we have a few returners which will allow us to continue to help them improve. For athletes heading home, STAY IN TOUCH! Let us know how your rowing and training is going. For rising Juniors and Seniors, please use SPARKS as a resource in the recruting process.
